Reduction by Chlorpromazine of Ulcers due to Acute Starvation in Mice

Abstract

EVIDENCE has accumulated indicating that starvation induces acute ulceration in the gastric glandular mucosa of mice1 but not in rats2,3, and that chlorpromazine inhibits ulceration in the Shay rat4. Also, recent evidence indicates that chlorpromazine reduces gastric acid and/or pepsin secretion in a number of circumstances in man and in dogs5–8. The investigation recorded here was undertaken to establish whether the tranquillizer, chlorpromazine, could prevent or decrease the incidence of acute gastric ulceration in mice as caused by starvation. In addition, a survey of the incidence of gastric glandular ulcers in normal, well-fed mice of both sexes was undertaken to establish this parameter, and to serve as a basis for comparison of the starvation procedures.
