Abstract
IT was first shown by Pavlov1 that meat extract was a powerful stimulant of gastric secretion when given by mouth. Later workers confirmed this but failed to identify the compounds responsible for the effect (for a review, see ref. 2). Following a full investigation of the constituents of meat extract3,4, a sustained effort was made to identify the gastric stimulating factor, with the results presented here.
