Mutation in Tobacco Mosaic Virus induced by a New Carcinogen, 4-Nitroquinolme N-Oxide

Abstract

SEVERAL reports on the mechanism of mutation induced by nitrous acid in tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) phages T 2, T 4, ϕ × 174, and in transforming deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), have been published. These indicate that, with nitrous acid treatment, inactivation and mutation occur at the same time, and therefore either may be due to a single chemical alteration in nucleic acid.
