Abstract
IN recent years it has been shown that a number of crystalline vinyl monomers polymerize when irradiated by γ-rays1–4 or high-energy electrons5. However, there appears to be no report in the literature of the ultra-violet initiation of solid-state polymerization, although this process could, in principle, facilitate elucidation of the mechanism of the reaction.
