Abstract
WE wish to report the observation of nuclear resonance absorption (Mössbauer effect1) of the 93 keV., 9.4 µsec. γ-ray2 of zinc-67. The energy width of this line is 4.84 × 10−11 eV., and the fractional energy resolution, defined as the ratio of twice the natural line width to the γ-ray energy, is 1 part in 1015, and is 103 fold narrower than that reported3 for iron-57. By the same token, the resonance is difficult to observe, because it is easily destroyed by small-amplitude sound vibrations and broadened and weakened by nuclear electric quadruple interactions in the crystals4.
