Maintenance of Parathyroid Tissue Fragments on Agar Substrates

Abstract

EXPLANTATION of organ fragments on to plasma clots1 or soft agar2 contained in Maximow slides or embryological watch glasses permits the preservation and development of organotypic tissue in vitro. The recent finding that mammalian cell strains can be cultivated for extended periods with minimal effort on nutrient media solidified with agar3,4 suggested the use of agar substrates to simplify and improve maintenance of functional organ fragments prior to surgical transplanatation.
