The C17-OH Group of Œstradiol: Relationships between its Anti-Atherogenic and Endocrine Actions

Abstract

ALTHOUGH œstrogens prevent coronary atherosclerosis in experimental animals1, related mechanisms of action have not been elucidated, nor is it universally accepted that prevention of atherosclerosis and endocrine activity are univocally related. Advantage was taken of the fact that two isomers of œstradiol, namely, α- and β-œstradiol, have very different endocrine activity, whereas the anti-atherogenic effects have not been so far determined (α-œstradiol, Δ-1,3,5 (10) œstratriene, 3β, 17α diol (m.p. 197°C.) generously provided by Laboratorios Dr. Gador, Buenos Aires, through Dr. Estoban Montuori, who also kindly prepared the pellets of approximate weight 25 mgm. each).
