Abstract
FUCOIDIN, a common polysaccharide sulphate in brown seaweeds, has been shown by methylation1,2 and acetolysis3 to consist of a chain of L-fucopyranose units joined in α-glycosidic linkages through carbon atoms 1 and 2 of adjacent units, each unit being sulphated on carbon atom 4. The results obtained from methylation studies also indicate that 1 : 3 and 1 : 4 linkages are present. A fucoidinase would greatly assist further studies on the structure of fucoidin. The object of this communication is to report the discovery of such an enzyme obtainable from two species of marine bacteria.
