Abstract
DIFFUSION which is caused by collisions in an ionized gas and which takes place across a magnetic field is known to be reduced by the field. The gas may be confined to a limited region, provided that particles can escape neither by motion along the field nor by drift motion across it. In the longitudinal direction, the particles may be trapped by strong field inhomogeneities1 or simply by having the field lines closed within the gas volume.
