THE pathway of aromatic synthesis in bacteria has been determined mainly by nutritional studies and the accumulation of intermediates in cultures of mutants blocked at various metabolic steps. The biosynthesis of tryptophan probably involves the conversion of aromatic precursors such as shikimic acid through anthranilic acid and indole1:
