Multiovular Follicles in the Ovaries of Lower Primates

Abstract

EXAMINATION of the ovaries of some of the lower primates has revealed the presence of numbers of multiovular follicles and multimiclear oocytes. Multiovular follicles have occasionally been reported in the ovaries of a great variety of animals ; but there has been no specific reference in the literature to their occurrence in the species mentioned below. Hartman1 found an abundance of multiple follicles in the opossum ovary ; some follicles contained up to a hundred oocytes, and many oocytes were found with two to eight nuclei. Recently, I reported2 the presence of multiple follicles in the goat ovary ; they were found to be mainly associated with œstrus and also occurred during a certain period in early pregnancy.
