Therapeutic strategies for the management of hypertension have improved substantially since their inception more than 50 years ago. In recent years, new agents that block the action of the renin-angiotensin system have been developed, adding significantly to the antihypertensive arsenal now available to physicians.

A major advance took place during the 1990s with the introduction of the first generation of non-peptide angiotensin II (A II) receptor antagonists. These agents are more specific than angiotensin- converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in terms of A II blockade, and are well tolerated, with a placebo-like side-effect profile.
