AJG is published on behalf of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
As the leading clinical journal covering gastroenterology and hepatology, The American Journal of Gastroenterology (AJG) provides practical and professional support for clinicians dealing with the gastroenterological disorders seen most often in patients.
Published with practicing clinicians in mind, the journal aims to be easily accessible, organizing its content by topic, both online and in print. Topics include:

Joel E. Richter, M.D., MACG, Temple University
Joel E. Richter, MD, is Richard L. Evans Professor of Medicine and Chair, Department of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas. He completed his internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went on to complete his residency in medicine and fellowship in medicine (gastroenterology) at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Among past academic appointments, Dr. Richter was chairman, Department of Gastroenterology, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, for 10 years.
Dr. Richter is past president of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and served as director, ACG, Institute for Clinical Research and Education from 1995 to 2004. He is the recipient of several awards for his work in digestive diseases, including the Joseph B. Kirsner Award in Gastroenterology (2000), the Janssen Award in Gastroenterology for Clinical Research in Digestive Diseases (2001), and The Samuel Weiss Award for Outstanding Service to the ACG (2001). From 2002 to 2003, he served as president of the World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus. He was named to the Best Doctors in America for gastroenterology multiple times.
Dr. Richter is the author or coauthor of more than 250 original papers, 114 editorials/reviews, 11 books, and 101 book chapters. He is co-editor in chief for the American Journal of Gastroenterology. His research interests include gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal chest pain.
Nicholas J. Talley, M.D., Phd., FACG, Mayo Clinic
Nick Talley, MD, PhD, is the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He holds the rank of Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He also holds the rank of Professor of Epidemiology. Dr. Talley has joint appointments in the Divisions of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Epidemiology in Mayo Clinic Rochester and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. He was formerly Director of the Motility Interest Group in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and before that was the Foundation Professor of Medicine, Nepean Hospital and the University of Sydney.
Dr. Talley is currently editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and serves on a number of prominent editorial boards. He is a founding member of the Rome Foundation, a past President of the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group, was a counselor in the American Gastroenterology Association Motility Section, and serves as a member of the Board of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Talley has a major interest in medical education. His popular student textbook, “Clinical Examination: A Systematic Guide to Physical Diagnosis”, is in its 5th edition and is distributed worldwide.
Dr. Talley's research is primarily focused on functional disorders, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Helicobacter pylori and eosinophilic disorders of the gut. He has recently described with his team the description of a new disease entity, eosinophilic duodenitis, linked to functional dyspepsia. His group has also documented a genetic component in upper and lower functional bowel diseases. He has published over 500 original and review articles in the peer-reviewed literature, and he is considered one of the leading authorities in clinical research on the stomach. He currently has support from the NIH as Principal Investigator evaluating the pathophysiology and pharmacogenomics of antidepressant therapy in functional dyspepsia.
